6/29 DVD Rundown

Rent ’em!

The Crazies (Breck Eisner, 2010)

With Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell.

The Crazies is another horror remake.  Most of them suck, but this one doesn’t.  That’s reason enough to rent it but if that simple statement isn’t enough to convince you, then maybe my glowing full theatrical review will.  Support Timothy Olyphant, people!  That guy really needs more roles.  He’s way cooler than bums like Gerard Butler.

Rating: 8/10

RIYL: 28 Days/Weeks Later, The Fog (but only the original, the remake is one of those bad ones I referred to above).

Hot Tub Time Machine (Steve Pink, 2010)

With John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, Clark Duke, Lizzy Caplan, Crispin Glover and Chevy Chase.

With a name like Hot Tub Time Machine, this is a movie I would think was awesome even if it wasn’t good.  Luckily, it’s also good so I don’t have to feel so guilty about simply loving a movie based on its title and premise.  Rob Corddry begins to wear you down by the end, but otherwise it is a very funny flick.  I have a theatrical review of this one as well and I doubt the “unrated” version offers anything different, but maybe I’ll have to count on one of my commenters to verify that?  Hint hint…

Rating: 7/10

RIYL: Better off Dead, The Hangover, Old School.

Haven’t seen ’em!

The White Ribbon doesn’t really look like it’s going to be my type of film, but it has received almost unanimous adoration and was an Oscar nominee for “best foreign language film” and for its cinematography.  Maybe I’ll give it a shot someday…

As for this one, no… just no.  Besides, as a general rule I find that movies with titles this long tend to suck unless they involve Brad Pitt (see: Jesse James, Benjamin Button).
