Certified Classics: Misery

“I thought you were good Paul… but you’re not good.  You’re just another lying ol’ dirty birdy.”

Misery (Rob Reiner, 1990)

With Kathy Bates, James Caan, Richard Farnsworth and Lauren Bacall.

Everyone knows how lame the Oscars are, so it’s really saying something about a performance when it wins the “Best Actress” award as a villain in a horror flick.  That’s just how good Kathy Bates is in Misery, as an obsessive fan who rescues her favorite writer from a near-fatal car crash.  She’s the scariest woman I’ve ever seen in a movie, outside of maybe Jason Voorhees’s mom.  I also really liked Richard Farnsworth as the sheriff, even though he mainly served as the much-needed comic relief.  Misery has that slow burn effect of all the great horror classics, and there are some genuinely gruesome and cringeworthy moments towards the end.

Rating: 8/10

RIYL: Rear Window, The Mist, Carrie.
