Hidden Gems: Shattered Glass

“He handed us fiction after fiction, and we printed them all as fact.  Just because we found him entertaining.”

Shattered Glass (Billy Ray, 2003)

With Hayden Christensen, Peter Sarsgaard, Chloe Sevigny, Steve Zahn, Rosario Dawson and Hank Azaria.

Giving this movie a second viewing over the weekend has inspired me to write a post informing you about its greatness.  Hayden Christensen gives an uncharacteristically strong performance as a talented young journalist who turns out to be a pathological liar, but Peter Sarsgaard steals the show as his editor.  It’s amazing to watch as he tries to be patient and understanding with his star writer and he’s electrifying when he finally reaches his boiling point.  I usually don’t care much about Oscars, but it’s an absolute cinematic atrocity that he wasn’t at least nominated for “Best Supporting Actor” in 2004.  I would have given him the award, hands down.  It’s a pretty straightforward story of investigative journalism mixed with a little bit of a psychological character study, but its biting and intense script (in addition to the aforementioned performances) is what sets it apart.  Please, if there is one thing you take away from this blog… take my advice and seek out this movie.

Rating: 9/10

Peter Sarsgaard is amazing in this film. One of the best supporting performances I’ve seen in recent years.

    And welcome to the LAMB!
