Weekly DVD Rundown

It’s a pretty slow week for new DVDs, but there’s at least one worth checking out.

Worth a rental:

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (Werner Herzog, 2009)

With Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer, Xzibit and Brad Dourif.

Nic Cage is a bad lieutenant.  He’s got a bad back, gambling and cocaine addictions, and is in love with a prostitute (Mendes).  He’s like the anti-Serpico.  Aside from that, the movie seems to wander around aimlessly as it doesn’t have as much of a central plot as it has a whole slew of side plots.  That’s really its biggest problem… well, besides the extremely wooden and unconvincing acting of some of the minor characters.  The one constant here is Cage, who turns in his best performance since 2003’s Matchstick Men.  When he gets ahold of a wacky character and gets the greenlight to do his magic, he’s just a wonder to behold.  He alone makes the movie worth seeing.

Rating: 7/10

RIYL: Leaving Las Vegas, The Wrestler, Bringing Out the Dead.

Not worth your time:

The Collector: I know a Saw rip-off when I see it.  You can’t fool me with your cool mask and mysterious title.  Granted, they put “from the writers of Saw IV, V and VI” right on the DVD cover so they obviously aren’t trying to fool anyone.  Either way, this is one viewer they won’t be “collecting.”  Whoa… see what I did there?

This is also your chance to get Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy on Blu-Ray.  You know, if you’re into that sort of thing.
