Oscar Predictions: Best Actor

The Nominees:

  • Colin Firth for A Single Man
  • Morgan Freeman for Invictus
  • Jeremy Renner for The Hurt Locker
  • Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart
  • George Clooney for Up in the Air

This is an exceptionally strong category this year.  Last year we had Sean Penn, Mickey Rourke and three guys who didn’t have a shot.  All of this year’s nominees could make an interesting claim for the trophy, but there is only one obvious frontrunner.

Colin Firth gave my favorite performance of the year.  Unfortunately, he is too much of a newcomer to the awards circuit and his movie wasn’t seen by enough people for him to have any chance of winning.  Hopefully he gets another shot in the future.

Morgan Freeman is the only person who could ever play Nelson Mandella in a movie, and he did a damn good job in Invictus but he doesn’t have much of a chance here.  He got his award a few years ago for Million Dollar Baby.

If George Clooney didn’t already win an Oscar for Syriana, the race would be much more interesting.  I think we would be looking at Clooney vs. Bridges in a two horse race (similar to Penn/Rourke last year).  Clooney was an early favorite but Bridges has captured the award with his heartfelt performance in Crazy Heart, making Clooney nothing more than an afterthought.  I have a feeling Clooney’s next Oscar will come as a director or producer… just a hunch.

If there is an upset in this category, I think it would come in favor of Jeremy Renner.  He is the true wild card in the group and his chances depend on how much the Academy liked The Hurt Locker.

Aside from that, Bridges has this thing all but locked up.  This is his 5th nomination, the first of which coming nearly 40 years ago for The Last Picture Show.  He’s a respected and beloved actor who has been turning in consistently great performances for decades.  This is well deserved… but that’s just like my opinion, man.

Prediction:  Jeff Bridges
