Oscar Predictions: Best Supporting Actor

The Nominees:

  • Woody Harrelson in The Messenger
  • Matt Damon in Invictus
  • Stanley Tucci in The Lovely Bones
  • Christopher Plummer in The Last Station
  • Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds

I didn’t even realize this until now, but I’ve only seen two of these movies (Basterds and Invictus).

The Messengers looks great but was only seen by about 15 people, The Lovely Bones is a movie that I’ve heard is dreadful aside from Tucci’s typically strong performance, and The Last Station looks like an absolute nightmare of a movie that I have no desire of seeing despite the exceptional cast.  These guys have no chance, but it is nice to see Tucci and Plummer get their first nominations after many years of great work.  Thanks for playing.  Enjoy the show.

Matt Damon was fine in Invictus, but this is Waltz’s award.  We’ve known this since August.  He follows in the trend of villains winning in this category, following the wins of Javier Bardem and Heath Ledger.  What separated Waltz’s performance was that he delivered an entirely different type of villain.  He was quirky, funny, and strangely likable despite his malicious tendencies.  Welcome to America, Christoph… I hope you stick around for a while.

Prediction: Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds.

  1. I think what makes his performance so strong is that Landa is essentially pure evil – yet he displays this awesome sense of chivalry.

But if he loses to anyone, it’s going to be Plummer.

  2. Peyton says:

This is about as big of a lock as Heath Ledger was last year.
