Oscar Predictions: Best Adapted Screenplay

The Nominees:

  • District 9
  • An Education
  • In the Loop
  • Precious
  • Up in the Air

Up in the Air has a total of 6 nominations, and this is the only category that it has a realistic chance of winning.  It has to be considered the odds-on favorite.  Hell, it even beat Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds script at the Golden Globes.  That’s just blasphemy.

It’s really a shame because In the Loop is the most deserving nominee.  Precious and An Education are fine nominees here, but the  strength of these movies was in the performances, not the writing.  I didn’t like District 9 as much as most, but I think it’s safe to say it doesn’t have a shot here.

That brings me back to Up in the Air.  As underwhelming as the writing (and movie as a whole) was for me, there is no way it doesn’t win this award.  If we lived in a perfect world, In the Loop would win.  We don’t… and the Oscars are far too often a reminder of this.

Prediction:  Up in the Air (Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner)

  1. That Academy has to award the film with something, and I think it’ll be Best Adapted, unless there ‘s an upset in Best Supporting Actress.

  2. Peyton says:

No way Jose, to you Frank. And Kevin, Up In the Air is deserving. ‘Nough said.
