The Indies: In the Loop

In the Loop (Armando Iannucci, 2009)

With Peter Capaldi, Tom Hollander, James Gandolfini and Steve Coogan.

I’ve been wanting to see this film for a while based on its wealth of outstanding reviews, and its recent Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay inspired me to finally pull the string.  It’s a shame that Up in the Air will inevitably win the award because In the Loop is far more deserving.  The way it’s shot makes it feel more like a sitcom, such as The Office or Arrested Development, than a feature film but its lack of cinematicness (yeah, I just made that up) actually works quite well for this type of film.  It is one of the funniest movies of the year, and Peter Capaldi’s character in the film has instantly become one of my favorite characters of all time.  He’s British, he’s an asshole, and he doesn’t care if he hurts your feelings.  In other words, he’s the fucking man.

Rating: 8/10

RIYL: Dr. Strangelove, Burn After Reading, The Office (TV).
