The Indies: The House of the Devil
With Jocelin Donahue, Greta Gerwig and Tom Noonan.
Horror fans rejoice! The House of the Devil is a slow building throwback to the classic horror films of the 70s and 80s. It is character driven and its scares are in the ever-increasing paranoia and suspense, which is a stark contrast to the gore reliant torture films and slasher remakes that have plagued the genre in recent years. It is a pretty familiar story about a college student who gets a little more than she bargained for when she takes on a babysitting gig, but the film’s greatness is in its execution. It looks and sounds like a classic with its dark, grainy photography and its retro music and titles. Jocelin Donahue is no Jamie Lee Curtis, but she is pretty solid in her starring role as the babysitter. Check this movie out if you are desperate for some good old-fashioned horror or Hitchcockian suspense.
