Certified Classics: The Last Picture Show

The Last Picture Show (Peter Bogdanovich, 1971)

With Timothy Bottoms, Jeff Bridges, Ellen Burstyn, Randy Quaid, Cloris Leachman and Cybill Shephard.

The Last Picture Show is the story of sex, love, death and growing up in a small Texas town during the 1950’s.  It is essentially a “coming of age” film, but it really becomes much more than that as it intertwines so many characters of wide-ranging ages and walks of life.  Its major theme is the loss of innocence, but many more lessons are learned along the way by both the film’s teenagers and the older adult generation.  While I obviously wasn’t alive during the time that the movie takes place, the movie seems to truly capture the essence of its time period and setting.  It features a wonderful ensemble cast, whose weakest link is unfortunately Timothy Bottoms who plays the film’s lead character, Sonny.

Rating: 8/10
