Quick Thoughts: Dick Tracy

Dick Tracy (Warren Beatty, 1990)

With Warren Beatty, Madonna, Al Pacino and Dustin Hoffman.

Dick Tracy is certainly the comic book movie that looks and feels the most like a movie version of a comic book.  The colors, set design and score are extraordinary, and the characters are all larger than life.  The biggest problem with the film is that producer/director/star Warren Beatty doesn’t seem to give himself enough to work with on the acting front of things.  His Dick Tracy character seems largely overshadowed by the slew of zany cartoonish villains.  The villains, particularly those played by Pacino and Hoffman, are the most entertaining parts of the film and Tracy just seems to be along for the ride. Pacino actually received an Oscar nomination for basically playing a caricature of himself.  This is far from what I would consider a perfect Dick Tracy movie, but I would hate to see the movie remade or rebooted into the CGI-filled mess that most of today’s comic book movies have become.  That would ruin all the artistic glory of this film, and besides, I really can’t picture anyone other than Beatty wearing that yellow coat and hat.

Rating: 7/10

RIYL: Batman (1989), Sin City, Sherlock Holmes, angry Al Pacino.
