B-Movie Awesomeness: They Live

They Live (John Carpenter, 1988)

With Roddy Piper and Keith David.

John Carpenter has directed some of the all-time great horror and sci-fi movies, including The Thing, Halloween and The Fog. They Live is not a classic, but it is a pretty enjoyable slice of B-movie awesomeness.  The movie’s plot involves an in-progress alien takeover and  subliminal messages in media and consumer products.  Wrestling legend “Rowdy” Roddy Piper stumbles upon some magic sunglasses that reveal these secrets, and he aims to put a stop to all the madness.  The movie takes a little while to get going, but it is a lot of fun once it picks up steam.  The marvelous mullet-sporting Piper is actually a very charismatic lead actor in the film, making me wonder why he didn’t turn into more of a movie star.  The movie also features a awkwardly long fight scene and Carpenter’s signature 80’s music, but its most memorable and lasting contribution to film history has to be Piper’s famous line of “I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass… and I’m all out of bubblegum!”
