Certified Classics: Sleepless in Seattle

Sleepless in Seattle (Nora Ephron, 1993)

With Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Bill Pullman, Rosie O’Donnell and Rob Reiner

This is what romantic comedies are all about.  Sleepless in Seattle perfectly combines, get this, romance AND comedy  in creating a love story about two undeniably likable characters played wonderfully by Hanks and Ryan.  Sure, there isn’t a lot of romance in the purest form since the two leads don’t meet until the final moments of the film, but the romance in this movie is unconventional.  I liken it to movies like Heat or High Noon in that sense.  The faceoffs don’t happen until the very last scene in those movies but the drama, or the romance in Sleepless in Seattle‘s case, is in the waiting.  When the climax finally happens, it is magic.  We get to know the characters before they get to know each other, and the we cheer for them because we are the first ones to realize how perfect they are for one another.
