Cool Stuff: Sam Mendes to Direct Next Bond Movie

The big news in the world of film today is that Sam Mendes has reportedly signed on to direct the 23rd installment in the James Bond franchise.  Again starring Daniel Craig as Bond, they could begin filming as early as June and are shooting for a release sometime in 2011.  Mendes (the husband of actress Kate Winslet) is a great director, but is not especially known for making action movies.  His last film was Away We Go, was an indie comedy that I consider to be a bit of a departure for him.  It was much more lighthearted than we are used to seeing from Mendes, but it worked really well.  It appears that he is continuing to expand upon his horizons as a filmmaker by signing on to make a Bond movie, which is something I always like to see out of directors.  I hate to see directors pigeonhole themselves in a particular style or genre.  Here’s a quick look at his filmography:

  • American Beauty (1999)
  • Road to Perdition (2002)
  • Jarhead (2005)
  • Revolutionary Road (2008)
  • Away We Go (2009)

I expect to see a lot more “acting” out of Craig than we saw in Quantum of Solace, but it will still have to feature plenty of action (it is still a Bond film after all).  Upon hearing the news, I went searching for some examples that show what Mendes is capable of doing with an action sequence.  I have decided to post a few of these videos online for your viewing pleasure.

The first one is a fantastic and beautiful scene from an underrated movie, Road to Perdition.  This scene really captures the intensity of the kill and doesn’t dilute its importance.  Plus, it has Paul Newman in it, so you can’t go wrong.

I couldn’t find the exact scene I wanted out of Jarhead, so here is a fan-made music video featuring a lot of the more action-packed sequences from that movie.  Enjoy.

  1. Way to steal my post idea. But I still love it (not you).

  2. You love my post? Or just simply the news?

Either way, there is no substitute for sheer efficiency and having absolutely no life.

  3. I love both your post AND the news. And if you love Nine as much as I do, I’ll love you too.

  4. And don’t forget about Mendes and Craig’s previous working relationship with “Road to Perdition”, which is where Craig got his start in American cinema.
